Case Study: Fatigue & Cravings

Anthony, a 54 year old male presented to clinic with health complaints of low energy with trouble maintaining erection, inability to lose weight and overall fatigue. At his first visit, he reported that his energy levels were often 4 out of 10. As he had to wake early to open his own full-time business, he stated that he was too busy for exercise at the start of the day and too exhausted by the end of the day, and was often craving sweet treats in the afternoon and evening.

He did not have any diagnosed conditions and was not on any medications. He had tried occasional supplements from the chemist such as Berocca and felt that it increased his energy, but the effects were never long lasting.

Treatment

The patient was supplemented with Mito-Charge, 1 scoop in the morning (7.5g) and 1 scoop in the afternoon (7.5g) and Citrulline (1 dose of 3g in the morning) after the first consultation. The patient was also asked to replace dessert and chocolate with fruit and nuts.

After 2 weeks, the patient stated that his energy had improved to 7/10 with the supplements. He was no longer experiencing trouble maintaining erections and was also going for walks after work a few times a week. He also felt that his afternoon cravings had improved.

However, due to his overall fatigue decreasing, he had noticed that he experienced significant postprandial fatigue. Therefore digestive support and Food Antigen testing are considered major future treatment aims.

Mechanism of Action

Citrulline

Citrulline is a non-protein amino acid with the major action of promoting Nitric Oxide synthesis (Wu and Morris 1998). Nitric Oxide is a major physiological signal to increase smooth muscle relaxation, therefore increasing blood flow to the various areas of the body. This is helpful in cases of erectile dysfunction as well as inability to exercise due to lack of sufficient blood flow. Citrulline would therefore have supported an increase in energy and blood flow to the various areas of the body, to increase overall energy production and provide broad support for the cardiovascular system.

Ribose (a primary ingredient in Mito-Charge)

Ribose is an integral part of the energy storing molecules in the body: ATP, ADP and AMP and therefore results in increased cellular energy overall. This can manifest as reduced fatigue and weakness and increased energy overall. It has been researched to increase energy by 61% and improve wellbeing by 30%. (Teitelbaum, J et al. 2012).
