Case Study: Wired but Tired

A 35 year old woman presented with extreme tiredness and fatigue, alongside anxiety. She had noticed that she often felt “wired but tired” which was resulting in sleep onset issues as well.
Treatment

The patient was prescribed 100mg of 5-HTP at rising and retiring.

Outcome

The patient was reviewed after two weeks of treatment and it was found that her anxiety had significantly lowered. She also mentioned that her sleep had been more restful which had resulted in her feeling more refreshed and less fatigued. However, she wanted to reduce her fatigue further. For future treatment, diet and other nutritional deficiencies are being reviewed.

Mechanism of Action

5-HTP is the direct precursor of Serotonin. Serotonin is primarily researched to be affective in mood, appetite and sleep regulation, among numerous other physiological actions.
It is likely that increasing Serotonin levels resulted in reduced anxiety and fatigue for the patient.
